Le Bourget, France | June 19, 2013– Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Oman Air today announced an order for five Boeing Next-Generation 737-900ER airplanes at the 2013 Paris Air Show. The order, previously unidentified on the Boeing Orders & Deliveries website, is valued at $473 million at current list prices.
With this order, Oman Air becomes the first customer in the Arabian Gulf region to order 737-900ERs. Currently, the airline operates a fleet of 15 Boeing Next-Generation 737-800s and two 737-700s. With this new order, the airline now has a backlog of six 737-800s and five 737-900ERs. In addition, Oman Air has six Boeing 787-8s on order.
“The 737 is able to operate effectively in very hot climates and has proven itself with its dispatch reliability, ease of maintenance and efficient performance,” said Wayne Pearce, chief executive officer, Oman Air. “These Next-Generation 737s will play a key role in supporting our efforts to strengthen and expand our network and boost tourism and business travel into Oman. The 737-900ER provides all the benefits of the Next-Generation 737 family, but with a higher seating capacity that gives us even better economics.”
“Oman Air’s order expands our customer base for the 737-900ER. We are very proud of our long-standing relationship with the airline which began over 12 years ago. Over the past decade, Oman Air has expanded its operations and destination network considerably, and we are proud to be playing a role in the airline’s vision of the future,” said Marty Bentrott, vice president of Sales for Middle East, Russia and Central Asia. “The Next-Generation 737’s record of unparalleled efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort make it the preferred airplane for airlines such as Oman.”
Le Bourget, France | June 19, 2013– Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Ryanair today finalized a firm order for 175 Next-Generation 737-800 airplanes valued at $15.6 billion at list prices. The order, originally announced as a commitment in March, is Boeing’s largest ever aircraft order from a European airline.
At a signing ceremony today at the 2013 Paris Air Show, Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of Ryanair, joined Ray Conner, Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO, to finalize the historic deal.
O’Leary flew into the air show on one of Ryanair’s 303 737-800s, which bore a special livery celebrating the agreement.
“Ryanair is proud to buy Boeing, who make great aircraft, and the 737-800 has been the foundation of Ryanair’s recent successful growth due to its great engineering and phenomenal reliability,” said O’Leary. “These 175 new airplanes will enable us to lower costs and airfares even further. They provide Ryanair with the additional capacity to exploit substantial growth opportunities that now exist as many of Europe’s flag and regional airlines are restructuring and are reducing their short-haul operations.”
“We are delighted to finalize this order. It is a testament to the value the Next-Generation 737 family brings to Ryanair,” said Conner. “As the most efficient, reliable, large single-aisle airplane flying today, the Next-Generation 737 has been and will continue to be the cornerstone of the Ryanair fleet. I could not be more proud to see the partnership between Ryanair and The Boeing Company extended for the years to come.”
The Boeing 737-800 is the best-selling version of the successful Next-Generation 737 family. Known for its reliability, fuel efficiency and economical performance, the Next-Generation 737-800 is selected by leading carriers throughout the world because it provides operators the flexibility to serve a wide range of markets.
Ryanair, which took delivery of its first 737-800 from Boeing in 1999, has the largest fleet of Boeing airplanes in Europe, operating over 1,600 flights per day from 57 bases on 1,600 routes across 29 countries, connecting more than 180 destinations.
Today’s announcement brings the total number of 737s ordered to date to more than 11,000. Boeing currently has more than 3,400 unfilled orders for 737s.
– First delivery to launch customer Southwest now scheduled in third quarter 2017
– Boeing retires key technology risks on 737 MAX program
Le Bourget, France | June 19, 2013– Boeing (NYSE: BA) announced today that first delivery of the 737 MAX 8 to launch customer Southwest Airlines will be a quarter earlier than originally scheduled – in the third quarter of 2017 instead of fourth quarter.
“Through our disciplined development on the 737 MAX program, the team has retired key technology risks,” said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager, Airplane Development, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, during a briefing at the 2013 Paris Air Show. “We have informed our customers and they are pleased they will be able to put these more fuel-efficient airplanes in their fleets sooner than planned.”
Since launch in August 2011, the 737 MAX team has worked to define the final configuration of the airplane including new LEAP-1B engines from CFM International, a redesigned tail cone and the Advanced Technology winglet. Testing in the wind tunnel and data analysis prove that the 737 MAX configuration, set to be final in July, will give customers a 13 percent fuel-burn improvement over today’s most fuel efficient single-aisle airplanes.
The work done by Boeing has enabled the program to accelerate the 737 MAX schedule. “We continue to follow our knowledge points through the development process and we have an executable plan. Testing, improvement workshops, and solid early data have allowed us to validate the airplane’s performance and move the schedule forward,” said Fancher.
Joe Ozimek, vice president of Marketing, 737 MAX, emphasized during the briefing that the 737 MAX will be the best single-aisle airplane in its class. “We know that the 737 MAX will be 8 percent more fuel efficient than the A320neo, fly farther and offer our customers more value,” he said.
Next, after firm configuration is achieved, the 737 MAX team will begin detailed design of the airplane, scheduled for completion in 2014.
