- New aircraft will support company’s business expansion
France | April 19, 2016– Garuda Indonesia has confirmed an order with Airbus for the purchase of 14 A330-900neo, the new re-engined version of the best-selling A330 widebody airliner, to support the company’s growth and business expansion in the future.
The deal was signed at a ceremony in London in the presence of the President of Indonesia, His Excellency Joko Widodo and British Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. David Cameron MP.
Garuda Indonesia plans to use the A330neo to develop its medium and long haul network, with the aircraft offering cutting edge technology along with more efficient operations. The order replaces and extends an existing order for seven A330-300 aircraft, and the A330neo will be delivered from 2019 onwards.
“We are pleased to announce that we continue our long-standing relationship with Airbus. Both Garuda Indonesia and Airbus fully understand the aim of the deal as a long-term strategy to win the global challenge,” said Arif Wibowo, CEO of Garuda Indonesia.
Arif explained, “The A330neo represents a more-efficient future for Garuda Indonesia. This order restructuring is believed to support our continued commitment to deliver the most modern, comfortable and excellent air travel service to all customers as well as to strengthen the sustained positive growth and business expansion of the company.
“Furthermore, we are confident that this latest technology aircraft will support us to compete better in the industry.”
Prime Minister David Cameron said: “This deal underlines the increasing importance of our ties with Indonesia – a fast growing economy and set to become the seventh largest in the world by 2030.
“We are the fifth biggest investor in Indonesia and our relationship has more untapped potential. We want to encourage more British businesses to seize on these opportunities and we will continue to support them by banging the drum for British skills and expertise.”
Airbus Chief Operating Officer Tom Williams said: “We are delighted to welcome Garuda Indonesia as a new customer for the A330neo.
“The A330neo will bring a range of benefits from unbeatable operating economics including significant reductions in fuel consumption, lower maintenance costs and extended range capability. The aircraft will have Airbus’ all new Airspace cabin which will ensure the A330 continues to be a benchmark for passengers and airlines alike.”
The deal is the latest milestone in a long standing partnership dating back more than 30 years, when the airline took delivery of its first Airbus A300.
The A330-800neo and the A330-900neo are two new members of the Airbus Widebody Family with first deliveries scheduled to start in Q4 2017. The A330neo incorporates latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, aerodynamic enhancements and new cabin features. Benefitting from the unbeatable economics, versatility and high reliability of the A330, the A330neo reduces fuel consumption by 14% per seat, making it the most cost efficient, long range widebody aircraft on the market.
In addition to greater fuel savings, A330neo operators will also benefit from a range increase of up to 400 nautical miles and all the operational commonality advantages of the Airbus Family.

Jakarta, Indonesia | June 26, 2014– Garuda Indonesia has selected air transport IT specialist, SITA, to fully manage its international network infrastructure, standardize IT operations including its domestic IT infrastructure, and facilitate quick migration to its new reservation system. SITA’s unique network offering has a footprint in more than 220 countries and offers shared infrastructure at over 300 airports, including SITA’s community approach to operational messaging.
Under the new agreement, SITA will extend its current role from managing Garuda’s international network to also managing its domestic network, including some domestic airports. It will also include handling domestic infrastructure vendors, providing end-user computing services and managing operational messaging. We are now able to provide high-quality network solutions to all our offices around the world.”
Garuda will also enjoy end-to-end visibility of its network status and operational performance via a comprehensive, real-time dashboard. And SITA’s Regional Internet Gateway Service will provide fast Internet access at outstations.
Ilya Gutlin, SITA President Asia-Pacific, said: “SITA is providing a fully-managed enterprise solution for remote sites, as well as town and airport offices around the world. Our new agreement strengthens our ongoing collaboration with Garuda Indonesia to support its transformation and modernization efforts. It’s also a perfect example of how SITA is helping to power growth both for Garuda and also for the wider air transport industry in Indonesia.”
As the first step in the program, SITA helped Garuda migrate to a new reservation system. The project, which was completed in just three months, included providing professional consulting services, deploying the necessary infrastructure for the new system, and supporting the associated new business processes. SITA will continue to collaborate with the airline to optimize and simplify delivery of its network services and support its specific business needs.

- Indonesia’s Flag Carrier introduces OnAir inflight connectivity
Geneva, Switzerland | January 24, 2014–As of today, passengers flying with Garuda Indonesia, which won World Best Economy Class at the Skytrax World Airline Awards last year, can use OnAir’s inflight Wi-Fi product, Internet OnAir, throughout the flight. They can visit their favourite websites, work on email, and keep up to date on social media. The Wi-Fi service is provided through arrangements made with OnAir’s chosen strategic partner, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk (Telkom Indonesia), state owned enterprise company in Indonesia with business portfolio TIMES (Telecommunication, Information, Media, Edutainment & Services).
Indonesia’s national airline flies to 33 domestic and 18 international destinations across Asia, Australia, and Europe, and carried more than 20 million passengers in 2012. OnAir’s services have been installed on Garuda’s existing A330 aircraft and will also be installed on its A330s currently on order. OnAir anticipates adding Mobile OnAir, its GSM service, upon the establishment of an appropriate framework by Indonesian regulatory authorities.
“We are happy to introduce the high quality of our cabin services, and particularly our inflight entertainment,” said Faik Fahmi, Director of Service of Garuda Indonesia. “We focus very strongly on providing a very high quality service through “Garuda Indonesia Experience” which deeply rooted in the rich traditions of our national culture. There is no question that the very best modern flying experience must include inflight connectivity and that the connectivity, like all our services, needs to be the same high level wherever we fly: that is a key reason why we chose OnAir. We are very pleased to be leading the way by being one of the first airlines in the region to provide these services.”
OnAir is the world’s leading provider of inflight connectivity. It is the only company able to offer consistent global coverage because it has a unique network of regulatory authorizations from over 100 countries, including the only licence to operate in Australian airspace, and more than 350 roaming agreements with mobile network operators. Also, OnAir uses Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband network, the only satellite technology designed for global mobility.
“Garuda Indonesia is a very ambitious airline seeking to stay at the front of the pack by being an early adopter of inflight connectivity,” said Ian Dawkins, OnAir CEO.
“We have now reached the point whereby inflight connectivity is a must-have service across the world. In 2014, we expect to see acceleration in interest from airlines, the number of contracts we sign and, most importantly, deployment like today’s service launch with Garuda Indonesia.”
OnAir is the only provider operating the joint Wi-Fi and mobile phone service. It is flying with a wide range of airlines in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and South America. In total, 20 airlines operate OnAir connectivity, more than any other inflight connectivity provider.
