October 31, 2017–The avionics team of Flying Colours Corp., the North American MRO business, has completed its first installation of a Rockwell Collins, Pro Line 21™ Advanced avionics suite for the flight deck of a Bombardier Challenger 300. The fitting of the state-of-the-art cockpit upgrade was carried out in conjunction with a scheduled heavy maintenance check at the Flying Colours Corp. KSUS, St Louis, MO. The aircraft was returned to the private customer on time and on budget.
The owner also took the opportunity to maximise the aircraft downtime by having ADS-B Out integrated to meet the mandatory requirements coming into effect in January 2020. The flexible architecture of the Pro Line 21™ Advanced system enables the addition of optional features including FANS 1/A, RNP 0.3 AR, Multi-Scan Radar, and Synthetic Vision System, at a future date, with minimal effort. With the new avionics suite in place aircraft value can be maintained, situational awareness is elevated, pilot workload is reduced and the aircraft benefits from improved operational efficiency.

In fact, we have upgraded avionics on more than 20 different aircraft in the last year, but this was the first time working with the Pro Line 21™ Advanced package. Flying Colours has already confirmed more of this type of upgrade and are in advanced discussions with several operators to complete the modification for them too. “Our avionics business has dramatically increased in the last 18 months. With the NextGen mandates and the ever-increasing variety of flight deck options, we anticipate that this sector of our business will continue to expand,” adds Kliethermes.
The Flying Colours KSUS facility is a Bombardier Authorised Service Facility and regularly handles heavy checks on a variety of Bombardier aircraft including Learjet, Challengers and Global types.

Ontario, Canada | August 7, 2017– Flying Colours Corp. has redelivered the first Canadian registered aircraft to have the Rockwell Collins network’s Future Airspace Navigation System (FANS) 1/A upgrade installed in combination with Flying Colours ADS-B solution. The FANS 1/A system, which is available through Rockwell Collins dealers, will improve operating costs, whilst the addition of the soon to be mandatory ADS-B Out technology will help maintain asset value.
This is the first time that a Canadian registered Bombardier Challenger 604 aircraft will have had this particular FANS 1/A solution, and the Flying Colours’ ADS-B Out solution, installed during a single upgrade at the Flying Colours, Bombardier Authorized Service Facility in Peterborough. The private owner requested the system’s modernization as part of a scheduled 48-month maintenance inspection with the full range of enhancements being completed in just under two months. The aircraft was returned to the customer on 3rd August.
The ADS-B Out technology was installed under the existing Flying Colours STC which the Canadian headquartered business owns for this type of aircraft along with the STC for the Challenger 300 & 605 types. Flying Colours secured approval from the Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) department to install ADS-B OUT technology on Canadian registered Bombardier Challenger 600-2B16 (604 and 605) and 300 airframes in January of this year. Whilst the new TCCA STC covering FANS 1/A complements the existing US FAA certification. To date the Flying Colours developed ADS-B Out STC for the Challenger 605/604, and Challenger 300 models, has been installed on more than 20 aircraft.

- Successful first installation of SwiftBroadband Safety
London, UK | August 14, 2014– Inmarsat, (LSE:ISAT.L), the leading provider of global mobile satellite communications services, has today announced the first successful installation and on-going trials of its ACARS1-capable SwiftBroadband (SB) Safety equipment on an Airbus A319.
SB Safety enables the fast, efficient transfer of ACARS data messages over the SwiftBroadband link. Installed in May this year, Inmarsat has been closely monitoring the system on board the aircraft, which has consistently surpassed performance expectations.
“This is the start of a revolution in communications for the flight deck. It shows the way forward for Future Air Navigation Systems (FANS) for the nearly 10,000 aircraft currently relying on our Inmarsat Classic Aero services, which were launched over 20 years ago,” said Leo Mondale, Inmarsat’s President of Aviation. “SB Safety provides prioritised voice and ACARS/FANS data transmission when an aircraft is out of reach of land-based communications, which is indispensable for aircraft flying over oceans.”
As well as ACARS, SB Safety also supports flight deck voice services and IP connectivity to the flight deck, enabling other flight operations and cockpit services, such as inflight updates to Electronic Flight Bags and Flight Data Recorder downloads. It also supports aircraft position reporting and tracking, and voice transmission for Air Traffic Management communications. A range of terminal variants is available, ensuring SB Safety can meet the requirements of all aircraft types, from the largest passenger types to business jets.

- Innovative solution responds to industry demand for improved aircraft monitoring
Geneva | June 2, 2014– SITA, who is at the heart of the air transport industry being community owned and driven, today announced that it will introduce an innovative technology solution which will allow airlines to efficiently and cost effectively track their aircraft. The solution, which is currently being evaluated by several airlines for testing, will utilize technology that is already installed in the aircraft to provide advanced tracking capabilities.
The SITA AIRCOM Server Flight Tracker solution will enable interested airlines to track aircraft movement by merging SITA’s airline dispatcher center system and airline operations center system (AIRCOM) Server, with its Future Air Navigation System (FANS) ground application, which is available to Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs). The FANS system is already installed in many aircraft, so the solution does not call for extensive additional cost or investment by the airlines.
“SITA is 100 percent owned by the air transport community and has worked with its aviation industry partners to define next generation technology for more than 65 years. The SITA AIRCOM Server Flight Tracker solution will allow end-to-end flight tracking on conditions and parameters the airline sets through their own ADS (Automatic Dependent Surveillance) contract. This in turn will help the airline to react to different aircraft events, including adapting the pace of tracking as appropriate. The solution can be fully managed from the ground and is not dependent on actions from the crew or cockpit as the data is sent automatically after initialization.
Using the new SITA AIRCOM Server Flight Tracker solution, airline flight dispatchers will be alerted to unexpected aircraft movements by using the FANS Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Contract (ADS-C) application to request aircraft position reports across the ANSPs borders. This will avoid any gaps between ANSP tracking of the aircraft and will cover areas where ANSPs do not yet have FANS ground systems. Airlines will also be able to see any unexpected loss of contact between their aircraft and air traffic control FANS ground systems by monitoring their aircraft’s use of FANS Air Traffic Services (ATS) Facilities Notification exchanges to log on to and hand off between ANSP FANS ground systems.
The catalyst for developing the solution is the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Special Meeting on Global Flight Tracking of Aircraft held in May where airlines were encouraged to use existing equipment and procedures to the extent possible to support flight tracking. The meeting resulted in the development of a Task Force led by both ICAO and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to further evaluate possible solutions to enhance flight tracking. SITA will comply with any mandated solution determined by the Task Force.
The airlines using the new SITA solution can also benefit from the latest Inmarsat proposition for aircraft tracking reports. SITA provides over 150 airlines’, flying more than 10,000 aircraft, with communications services for their Aircraft Communications and Reporting Systems (ACARS) cockpit data link systems through its global AIRCOM network. This network consists of 1400 VHF radio stations and links via satellite.

First shipments of the ST 4300 system are expected in June 2014 and the system’s FANS capabilities are expected to be available starting in Q4 2014.

Satcom1 specialises in services provided to VVIP, Head-of-State, wide-bodied business jets. In order to address the needs of this specialised market segment, Satcom1’s Research and Development (R&D) department has developed a service that is a part of its AvioIP Software Suite, bonding two Inmarsat SwiftBroadband channels to deliver high-speed data services of up to 900kbps to the user. Since 2012, this solution has been successfully installed on many business aircraft. Satcom1 continues its R&D efforts to optimise SwiftBroadband and AvioIP suite capabilities to provide a world-class service to end-customers and maintain the leading edge in the industry.
