15 A350 XWB deliveries already dispatched to Cathay Pacific all with jet fuel blend

Toulouse, France | June 1, 2017– Showing its strong commitment towards eco-efficiency, Airbus becomes the first aircraft manufacturer to offer its customers the option of delivering new jets using a blend of sustainable jet fuel.

The 15th A350-900 for Cathay Pacific departed Toulouse on June 1st, bound for Hong Kong, with a 10 percent blend of sustainable jet fuel in its tanks. Since the first delivery in May 2016, all of Cathay Pacific’s A350s have been delivered in this configuration.

The biofuel delivery flight concept, originally devised by Cathay Pacific in 2015 is now in full operation and this latest delivery flight confirms that the supply chain set up a year ago by Airbus and Total is functioning correctly, from the fuel production, through an integrated management at its Saint-Martin Toulouse site and to the customer delivery.

“This is a major step for Airbus and a first for the regular delivery of new production aircraft. It enables us to demonstrate that aviation biofuels are today a reality. We now target to expand this initiative to all our delivery sites, close to our customers,” said Frederic Eychenne, Head of New Energies at Airbus.

The first delivery flights from Hamburg, Germany and Mobile, US, using this type of biofuel are planned as of 2018. Since 2016, Airbus has offered this option for its delivery flights from Toulouse.

The aim is to continue reducing the carbon footprint of each flight starting with the aircraft delivery. Eychenne said: “Right from the first day of operation, an airline can clearly demonstrate its aim of reducing carbon dioxide emissions, thus helping to meet the commitments of the international civil aviation community.”

Through its brand new design with the latest cutting-edge technologies, the A350 XWB has a lower fuel burn and therefore lower CO2 emissions than the aeroplane it replaces, so when sustainable jet fuels are included as part of the operation, the net CO2 emissions reduction factor becomes even greater.

As part of its environmental strategy, Airbus intends to continue its efforts by collaborating with all stakeholders in the biofuels sector. “Through this partnership with Cathay Pacific and Total, we have demonstrated that it is possible to set up supply chains for fuels with a low carbon footprint,” Eychenne added. “This initiative confirms Airbus’ commitment to environmental efficiency and its support toward international aviation’s emission reduction targets.”

Miami, FL | January 16, 2017– Cathay Pacific Airways has selected Avionica as the integrator and supplier for their e-Enabled, airborne global connectivity program. Starting in early 2017, Cathay Pacific’s second generation e-Enabled system will be deployed across the Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon fleets, including the B777, B747, A320 and A330 aircraft types. In selecting Avionica, Cathay Pacific obtains extensive expertise in STC development and installation support for its e-Enablement solution. Avionica’s e-Enablement hardware package provides Cathay Pacific a single, common set of hardware across Boeing and Airbus fleets.

“Avionica offers Cathay Pacific an integrated airborne hardware solution for e-enablement and full-time global connectivity. As part of their STC integration experience, Avionica’s STC design data package is of among the highest quality that we have seen,” said Rob Saunders, Head of Engineering Business Improvement and Lean at Cathay Pacific Airways.

This selection marks an important milestone in the development of airline e-Enablement as Avionica continues its expansion into Asia’s air transport market with its versatile global voice and data connectivity solutions. Accordingly, Cathay Pacific will achieve fleetwide deployment of an advanced e-Enablement program – a program that is at the heart of Cathay Pacific’s efficiency enhancing initiatives.

Avionica’s solution available to Cathay Pacific includes:

  • satLINK MAX Iridium satellite communications system
  • aviONS Onboard Network Server
  • avCM 4G cellular device
  • avSYNC QAR download

satLINK MAX remains the industry’s only 4-channel, FANS-1/A and ATC Voice Safety Service approved Iridium SATCOM system. The multitude of Iridium channels enables Cathay Pacific to maximize e-Enabled aircraft connectivity without restricting critical Voice and FANS-1/A safety services.

aviONS provides an open-platform network solution supporting airline and third party e-Enablement systems. aviONS enhances airborne connectivity with global 4G Cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity. Cathay Pacific will tap aviONS’ Wi-Fi connectivity for crew wireless applications, including efficient in-flight reporting of cabin discrepancy.

To manage connectivity, Avionica’s avSYNC global data transfer network is available to provide automated data transfer between aircraft and their operation center. As Cathay Pacific’s e-Enabled aircraft focus is efficiency, avSYNC’s ability to automate data synchronization of onboard applications would become a key component of its strategy.

“We’re excited to have been selected by Cathay Pacific in deploying the e-Enabled aircraft solution across their fleet of aircraft. We welcome Cathay to the family of customers that entrust their hardware, STC integration, and data management to us,” said Avionica Vice President of Sales Anthony Rios. “Cathay is leading the charge in e-Enablement. With this selection, Avionica becomes the lead enabler to achieve that.”

August 10, 2012– Cathay Pacific Airways announced today that it is expanding its flagship inflight magazine, Discovery, into the digital environment, employing a number of new channels to enrich the airline’s existing customer communication platforms.

Digital Discovery, scheduled to go live on 2 August 2012, will be available for download as a digital magazine, as an app for mobile devices, and for browsing on the Cathay Pacific website – cathaypacific.com/discovery. The print version of Discovery will continue to be available onboard all Cathay Pacific flights.

Custom-built for Cathay Pacific by the magazine’s publisher, ACP Magazines Asia Ltd, the Digital Discovery platform has been optimised for usability and functionality across all devices – from smartphones and iPads to non iPad tablets and desktop computers – to bring a fresh, bilingual approach to quality travel editorial.

Cathay Pacific General Manager Product Alex McGowan said: “As smartphones and other digital communication devices become increasingly popular, the launch of Digital Discovery is an exciting development that allows us to create and distribute engaging digital content across multiple channels, all integrated under the Discovery brand. This is a great way to enhance and complement the onboard entertainment experience for our passengers.”

The digital platforms offer a wide variety of interactive elements including embedded videos, high-resolution screenshots, interactive features as well as other exciting and exclusive content. Moreover, while the magazine can be downloaded from the App Store, HTML 5 technology is employed to ensure that Discovery will be available app-free across almost all devices from just about anywhere.

The digitalised content on the website centres on two key editorial pillars to provide passengers with useful travel information: a suite of snapshot guides to Hong Kong across a range of “hit lists”, including dining and hotels plus activity and entertainment options; and “new and now summary” guides covering 44 Cathay Pacific destinations.

2nd April 2009 – Cathay Pacific picked up the award for Airline of the Year award last night at the first live World Airline Awards ceremony, held during Aircraft Interiors Expo.

Organised by Skytrax, the World Airline Awards was celebrating its 10th anniversary at the same time as Aircraft Interiors Expo was commemorating its own 10th edition milestone with an exhibitor and airline networking event. Around 500 exhibitors and visitors attended the awards ceremony to see 24 airlines go up to receive their awards.

Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, handed out awards in 34 categories. The winners are selected by the airline industry’s most important audience – its customers. More than 16 million passengers, representing 95 different nationalities, took part in completing the Skytrax World Airline Survey this year. The awards are recognised around the world, and renowned for being the only truly global, independent passenger survey of airline standards. The survey does not receive any outside or third-party sponsorship; it is entirely funded by Skytrax Research.

Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, said: “Cathay Pacific’s achievement can be attributed to its strong showing across most of the survey categories reflecting a great consistency of service and product, which is clearly satisfying customers – be they in first, business or economy class. It was also apparent that Cathay Pacific’s airport services in its home airport of Hong Kong performed very well for the airline in terms of pleasing the passengers.”

Aircraft Interiors Expo’s Event Director, Katie Murphy said: “Hosting the World Airline Awards presentation during our 10th edition party has really topped off what has been a great show for us. We are really pleased with the level of airline and general visitor attendance – as well as the rebookings we have already taken for the 2010 show.”
