Royal Jordanian passengers are able to stream IFE content such as movies and TV shows for free to their own personal devices. Content includes music, games and airline information.

Bluebox Wow to be deployed on new Embraer E190-E2 aircraft and Airbus A320s serving domestic and regional routes

Dunfermline, UK | December 20, 2018–The impressive snow leopard livery on Air Astana’s new Embraer E190-E2 wasn’t providing the only wow-factor at the special celebratory launch event at Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport last Friday. The aircraft was also equipped with Bluebox Wow portable wireless IFE boxes which have been selected by the airline to deliver in-flight entertainment to Air Astana passengers on the new aircraft – a first for the new E190-E2.

“All of us at Air Astana are pleased to receive our first E190-E2, and we look forward to a smooth entry into service and a simple transition for our pilots. We know Embraer’s E-Jets well, and have high expectations for their new generation aircraft in terms of economics, environmental impact, and levels of comfort and convenience for our customers,” said Peter Foster, President and CEO of Air Astana.

“I was delighted to be in Astana taking part in the launch of Air Astana’s new E190-E2 aircraft – and have been keen to share the news of another Bluebox IFE innovation Air Astana is delivering for its passengers,” said David Brown, Business Development Director, Bluebox. “As a provider of IFE solutions to Air Astana for nearly a decade, we are proud of our role in the evolution of their award-winning passenger experience story, and the launch of another first for the industry – portable wireless IFE on the new E190-E2 aircraft.”

Bluebox Wow will not only be deployed on Air Astana’s five new E190-E2s as they come into service, but also in business class on five Airbus A320s in February 2019. Though this is the first wireless IFE deployment for Bluebox with the airline, Air Astana have been a Bluebox customer since 2009, currently using Bluebox Ai iPads in business class on their Airbus A320, A321, Boeing B757 and Embraer E190 aircraft. With the addition of Bluebox Wow on Air Astana’s A320s, the 850 Bluebox Ai iPads will be upgraded to Bluebox Hybrid, to enable access to both pre-loaded early window content and additional streamed content. The Bluebox Hybrid devices will also be able to connect to existing fixed wireless systems deployed in the Air Astana fleet, offering additional content to business class passengers on those aircraft as well.

Bluebox Wow provides wireless content streamed to passenger devices in any aircraft cabin, including a wide range of film, TV, audio, games and other digital content, accessed through any web browser. With a remarkably low cost of ownership, Bluebox Wow is a discrete, portable, lunchbox-sized unit stowed securely in overhead bins.

Air Astana took delivery of its first of five E190-E2 aircraft on 3 December. The aircraft arrived from Brazil featuring special Air Astana “Snow Leopard” livery, intended to draw attention to the threat of extinction faced by this large wild cat, which is a native of the mountain ranges in southern Kazakhstan. Air Astana has also donated US$10,000 / Tenge 3,800,000 to Kazakhstan’s Wildlife Without Borders Fund, which is taking urgent action to protect the diminishing numbers of Snow Leopards in the country.

Air Astana currently operates a fleet of nine E190s on domestic and regional services within Kazakhstan and Central Asian countries, with the first aircraft having entered service in 2011. The E190-E2s will replace older Embraer E190s in Air Astana’s fleet, which also includes Airbus A320 family aircraft and Boeing 767-300ERs and 757-200s. While the E190-E2 is the same size as its predecessor – fitted out in a 2-2 configuration accommodating up to 114 passengers – the new jet offers significant reductions in various fuel and MRO-related costs in addition to improved environmental credentials.

Company says offer of award-winning IFE solution for visually impaired passengers is “the right thing to do”
APEX EXPO, Boston USA | September 24, 2018– At APEX EXPO, Bluebox Aviation Systems has announced that all existing and new customers of Bluebox’s iPad-based IFE platforms will benefit from the company’s development of Bluebox aIFE, an app for visually impaired passengers that won a Crystal Cabin Award earlier this year. For all Bluebox iPad devices currently in service, Bluebox offers to provide the upgrade free of charge, in line with device update cycles. The combined build platform will also be offered to any new customers of iPad-based IFE deployments at no extra cost. The combined build enables cabin crew to switch between the standard IFE mode (Bluebox Ai or Bluebox Hybrid, a Wi-Fi enabled version of Bluebox Ai) and accessibility mode (Bluebox aIFE) depending on a passenger’s needs.

“Since launching Bluebox aIFE with Virgin Atlantic, we developed a way of combining the standard and accessible versions on the same device,” said Kevin Clark, CEO, Bluebox. “Recognising how simple it is to update Virgin Atlantic’s iPads, we thought we would be just extend the same capability to all of our customers. Having worked with a group of visually impaired people in the system’s development, and hearing the feedback from Virgin Atlantic passengers about what it means to be able to use the system, we felt it was the right thing to do, and could be our contribution to directly improving the passenger experience of visually impaired passengers around the world.”
Bluebox worked closely with Virgin Atlantic and a group of visually impaired people from the UK charity Guide Dogs in the development of the original Bluebox aIFE platform, which has been entertaining passengers with visual impairments aboard Virgin Atlantic flights serving destinations across North America, the Caribbean, Africa, China, India and the Middle East.
The combined build offers airlines providing IFE a two-in-one solution for ensuring IFE is available to all passengers throughout their flight – at a tap of an on-screen button, a cabin crew member selects the accessible version for someone who is visually impaired, or the standard IFE mode. When the devices are offered for rent during a flight, it means visually impaired passenger can take up the offer just like anyone else. Or, where the devices are used for service recovery on an aircraft with seatback IFE, it means the same device can be used as the primary screen for a visually impaired passenger or as a backup if any other passenger’s seatback screen malfunctions.
Bluebox will upgrade devices in line with the deployment cycles of existing customers taking up the offer, working with them closely to ensure they understand how the new functionality works. For any new customer of Bluebox Ai or Bluebox Hybrid, the combined build with Bluebox aIFE can be included in the initial deployment.

Dunfermline, UK | January 23, 2017– It is announced that AviIT Ltd. and Bluebox Avionics Ltd. have been combined under a new company – Bluebox Aviation Systems Ltd. – with AviIT leadership assuming full management and operational responsibility for the new company. The Bluebox brand, products and IP will be owned and represented by Bluebox Aviation Systems Ltd.

  • Bluebox’s IFE platform in Hawaiian’s A330 Premium Cabin is a win-win for passengers and the airline

Dunfermline, UK | October 12, 2016– Bluebox Avionics has partnered with Hawaiian Airlines to mark a “first” for in-flight entertainment (IFE) and Bluebox’s innovative IFE systems. The airline, which last week launched sales for its unique Premium Cabin service on the Airbus A330 for select markets, designed its seats to include Bluebox’s award-winning IFE system delivered on 12.9” iPad ProTM devices. This is the first deployment of a Bluebox IFE solution based on the iPad Pro as standard in a premium-class service.

“When designing our Premium Cabin for the A330 aircraft, we wanted to redefine the leisure travel experience to Hawaii,” said Avi Mannis, senior vice president of marketing at Hawaiian Airlines. “Having our seats custom-built meant we could also include a totally new IFE solution as part of that experience – one that delivered the highest quality visuals on a large-format screen. That’s why we turned to our partners at Bluebox for a solution.”

“Bluebox’s system gives Hawaiian the ability to provide the latest high-quality technology in its cabins, tracking the rapid evolution of device technology and making Hawaiian Airlines a perfect example of a first mover – bypassing the status quo to deliver something unique to its passengers,” said David Brown, Bluebox’s Joint Managing Director. “Our IFE platform not only provides an excellent customised passenger experience but saves airlines money – a win-win for both passengers and airlines.”

Airlines are looking for new ways to deliver outstanding services to passengers whose expectations are much greater in terms of technology and content. Bluebox’s use of commercial off-the-shelf devices to deliver its IFE system helps airlines meet these expectations and provides airlines with a more cost- effective IFE option.

“Bluebox has the relationships secured to deliver early window content on our systems and a high- quality platform that is much easier to deploy and upgrade at a fraction of the cost of traditional systems,” added Brown.

This latest solution for Hawaiian’s A330 Premium Cabin reflects the carrier’s commitment to enhance its IFE options, and another “first” for their ongoing relationship with Bluebox. In 2013, Hawaiian Airlines was the only U.S. carrier to offer the iPad miniTM on all of its wide-body Boeing 767-300 aircraft. Deploying a Bluebox system on 1,500 devices across 14 aircraft, the iPad mini devices replaced all portable entertainment systems on Hawaiian Airlines’ Boeing 767 routes at that time.

Hawaiian’s new Premium Cabin featuring IFE powered by Bluebox Avionics is available for travel starting
December 5th between Honolulu and Narita, Brisbane and Auckland, and as of December 13th for flights
between Honolulu and Sydney. Hawaiian’s lie-flat seats debuted this summer as a surprise-and-delight
experience for guests traveling on the airline’s North America network. The Premium Cabin will arrive in
additional markets as the company retrofits its fleet of 23 wide-body A330 aircraft through 2017.

  • Robinson to expand deployment of Bluebox’s market-leading IFE systems to airlines across the EMEA region

Dunfermline, UK | October 4, 2016–
As part of its growth and expansion plans, innovative inflight entertainment (IFE) systems provider, Bluebox Avionics, has appointed Neil Robinson as Director of Sales, for the European, Middle East and African (EMEA) markets.
With over twenty years of aviation experience, Robinson has a strong background in technology sales and business development, and specifically in the IFE systems market through his previous position at Lumexis Corporation of Irvine, California.

“The technology developed by the team at Bluebox is shaking up the IFE market. My focus is quite simply to help more customers take advantage of all the benefits of Bluebox’s technology,” Robinson said. “Of course that means driving more sales for Bluebox, but it also means giving airlines an innovative improvement over the status quo of costly and difficult-to-upgrade in-built systems, and options for service recovery, accessibility and ancillary revenue.”
David Brown, Bluebox’s Joint Managing Director, said: “Neil’s knowledge and experience in business development is exactly what we need to drive our ambitious growth plans across EMEA. But more than just the right skill set, his enthusiasm for how our solutions are disrupting the traditional IFE market will help us build momentum in this rapidly evolving industry.”

“Bluebox has a great team, innovative technology, solid industry partnerships, and already has an impressive global client list,” Robinson added. “I’m looking forward to helping even more airlines deliver an enhanced passenger experience with Bluebox IFE technology.”

Robinson will be based in the UK and can be reached at neil.robinson@blueboxavionics.com. Currently visiting customers across the EMEA region, he will also be joining the Bluebox team at APEX Expo (24-27 October, Singapore), a key event in the airline industry calendar.

London, United Kingdom | January 22, 2016– At the Aircraft Interiors Expo this year Bluebox Avionics introduces an exciting new addition to its range of innovative portable and wifi IFE solutions.

Bluebox Walk-on wiFE is a simple and inexpensive first step to introducing superb wireless streamed content to passengers in any aircraft cabin.
Before we talk about all the positives Bluebox Wow delivers, let’s start with the negatives:
• No long lead time required
• No cabin installation costs
• No passenger app required
Despite its remarkably low cost of ownership and ease of deployment Bluebox Wow delivers a flexible wireless capability supporting streamed video and audio content, games, digital publications and our new Seat2Seat networked messaging application. All that in a discrete unit about the size of the average lunchbox.

Why Walk-on wiFE?
For ultimate flexibility, Wow is a lightweight, portable product that can be taken onboard fully loaded, fully charged and ready to go. It’s easy to switch between aircraft as needed, and scalable from the smallest business or regional aircraft to the largest cabin deployments by simply utilising multiple Bluebox Wow units.

Bluebox Wow supports free-to-seat and pay-for-access commercial models, and again it’s simple to switch between them.

Our tried and tested high quality battery typically lasts up to 15 hours supporting up to 50 devices simultaneously. For even greater flexibility the rechargeable battery is easy to replace in flight turnaround, ensuring service continuity for even the longest sectors.

But does it deliver Early Window Content?
For an enhanced entertainment option Bluebox Wow interfaces seamlessly with our Bluebox Hybrid (iPad) units, which are approved by Hollywood studios to host pre-loaded EWC movies and enable access to streamed content. So while Bluebox Wow reaches all personal devices, airlines can offer a superior service proposition to premium passengers or generate ancillary revenue from onboard iPad rental.
Stand-alone or Hybrid, Bluebox Walk-on wiFE delivers fantastic value, flexibility and a great way to quickly introduce IFE for the first time.

A part of your IFE Evolution
Following a typical six months’ successful deployment of Bluebox Wow, and a proven business case, we recommend you consider upgrading to the fully installed Bluebox wiFE streaming solution. The additional benefits of our fitted system include enhanced performance, a wider choice of content options and extra operational features.

London, UK | November 22, 2013– Longstanding Bluebox Avionics customer British Airways and its French subsidiary OpenSkies have chosen to upgrade their iPad passenger entertainment offer on participating transatlantic flights.

Both airlines opted to enhance the IFE experience for passengers with a new purpose-designed Content Carousel user interface for their secure iPad solution Bluebox Ai.

Content Carousel delivers a more engaging and intuitive navigation experience for users, and greater flexibility for depth of content and filtering options. It also makes best use of iOS gestures functionality, recognizing that business travellers today are savvy tech users who expect smart and elegant solutions from any device they interact with.

BA deploys Bluebox iPads aboard A318 aircraft on its Club World London City service, offering all-seat business class flights between London and JFK. Similarly, OpenSkies, the premium airline connecting Paris to New York, provides each passenger with a Bluebox iPad for IFE.

“The new Content Carousel GUI provided an excellent opportunity for us to enhance the look and feel of the iPad deployment”, says Bluebox Project Manager Kevin Birchmore. “The upgrade went in with ease and we’re really pleased with how it looks.”

“We were really impressed with the look and feel of the new Bluebox GUI; it was an easy decision to move forward with the upgrade. Our passengers will now benefit from a more intuitive user interface, coupled with a tailored selection of programmes to fit our ‘Paris-Yorkers’ clients’ expectations as we’ve also just enhanced our entertainment offer”, adds Karin Drylie, Marketing & Product Manager at OpenSkies.

London, UK | March 27, 2013– Bluebox Avionics announces that Israel’s flag carrier, El Al, has significantly expanded the scale of the recently deployed Bluebox Ai portable inflight entertainment system. El Al initially deployed the Bluebox Ai solution in September 2012 providing customers with access to the latest Hollywood early window content as well as a range of other movie, TV, audio, reading and gaming content all delivered via secure iPad devices. This has proven so successful that the flag carrier ordered more units to meet demand, tripling the current implementation to 300 units.

Tal Kalderon, Inflight Entertainment Manager at El Al, is delighted with the impact of Bluebox. “Passengers have really taken to the Bluebox solution which has lived up to its promise of delivering a wide range of engaging content in a powerful package. It has also proven to be very easy for us to manage. We therefore decided to quickly increase the number of units we have deployed to make more widely available to our passengers.”

David Brown, Joint Managing Director of Bluebox recognises the value of customers expanding. “This decision to increase the number of Bluebox Ai units deployed so quickly after the initial roll out underlines the significant impact of the solution. El Al’s customers are delighted, the airline is clearly delighted and of course we are also delighted.“

London, UK | March 20, 2013– Bluebox Avionics is delighted to announce that Mexico’s flag carrier Aeromexico has implemented the Bluebox Ai portable inflight entertainment system to provide its customers with a superior inflight entertainment experience. The Bluebox solution made its first appearance for Aeromexico on the inaugural flight between Mexico and the UK in December ahead of the deployment of over 250 units across a number of Aeromexico’s long haul services over the last month. This is the first portable IFE service utilizing the fourth generation iPad.

Bluebox provide Aeromexico’s customers with access to the latest Hollywood early window content as well as a range of other movie, TV, audio, reading and gaming content.

Fernando Rojas Hernandez, Service Planning Manager at Aeromexico is delighted that the capabilities of the Bluebox system position Aeromexico at the leading edge of portable IFE provision. “The iPad provides a superb platform for the delivery of inflight entertainment. The Bluebox Ai solution provides Aeromexico customers with a great blend of content, including early window Hollywood movies, in a package that is very easy for us to deploy and operate.” The rapid deployment is a bonus as Fernando notes, “it was been less than 6 weeks from deciding on Bluebox to bringing the system into service which is quite amazing. The joint efforts of the Bluebox and Aeromexico team really paid off as all understood the desire to launch Bluebox at the same time as our new Mexico to UK service.”

David Brown, joint Managing Director of Bluebox, welcomes the decision to deploy Bluebox Ai. “Aeromexico services are rapidly expanding and we are delighted to be able to provide a portable solution that delivers a very high quality IFE experience to Aeromexico customers. This is our first deployment in the region and we are absolutely convinced that it will continue to delight both the airline and its customers”.

Brown also reflects on the recent performance of Bluebox Avionics. “Aeromexico joins a growing group of airlines that have selected Bluebox Ai with over 7,000 units deployed in the last 15-months alone. It has been a period in which the Bluebox solution has developed to deliver an outstanding IFE experience with deployment capabilities that are enhanced by the optional protective case and 20 hour battery. There’s plenty more to come and we look forward to further announcements in coming months.”

– London based CSP introduces a new brand identity and a new man at the marketing helm

September 1, 2012– DMD Phantom is the new name of Phantom Media. Following the completed acquisition of Phantom by Dawson Media Direct last year, the new name and brand identity reflects the company’s enhanced role as a multichannel content service provider, drawing on both its own and DMD’s long heritage in media services to the
travel industry.

The London based CSP has built a reputation since it began back in 1999 for superior service, creativity and innovation, and was a co-developer in 2005 of the groundbreaking Bluebox IFE platform – the compact computer-based solution that anticipated the tablet revolution.

DMD Phantom continues to provide a full range of premium content services to airlines and other travel operators, and to work closely with its Bluebox partners, drawing now on all the benefits of a truly global network of marketing and fulfilment resources.

“This final phase of integration into the DMD family strengthens our service proposition enormously”, says Stuart McGeachin, DMD Phantom co-founder and creative director. “It means we can broaden out our offering from the usual movies, TV, music and games to include print and new digital products too. We’re especially excited to be involved with Digiredoo, DMD’s new digital reader solution for aircraft and lounges. It’s the kind of innovation we relish, and I’m sure it will be a huge
success with airlines.”

The task of marketing the enhanced DMD Phantom offering falls in large part to newly appointed Business Development Manager Alan McInnes. With over 20 years in the aviation service sector Alan understands both sides of the industry, having worked at a number of airlines and service partners. His previous roles, including Head of Inflight Services at Thomas Cook and Operations Director at IFE Services, equip him with broad-based operational expertise covering everything from sales and
account management to product development and delivery.

DMD managing director John Howe welcomes Alan’s valuable experience. “The
brand review at DMD Phantom offers a great opportunity to spread the word about our expanded range of products and services, and I’m confident Alan has all the right qualities and qualifications to help achieve that with us”, he says.

With over 30 years in print media fulfilment across the globe, Dawson Media Direct is the world’s leading supplier of newspapers and magazines to airlines and rail operators.

DMD has more airline clients and more media owner relationships than any other content service provider. Its media distribution network covers Europe and the Middle East, Asia and the Americas, and its digital innovation to date embraces custom and acquired content and multiplatform delivery solutions.
