Perhaps you noted that your ticket over to Hamburg was more expensive than last year’s, some writers have noted that the increase in all airline costs have grown over that last 5 or 6 years and that has boded well for the airlines. This may seem counterintuitive, but the doubling of fuel costs from approximately $1.50 per gallon to over $3.00 per gallon has actually helped the airlines. The airlines have adjusted to the new reality and dropped inefficient routes, gotten rid of older fuel guzzlers, added more (new) aircraft seats and IFE, and raised prices. They themselves have gotten more efficient, and in the process, have given the economic thumbs down to startups that, in the past, have beaten them at their own game and basically made it unprofitable to compete with the “new” efficiency. In a recent Associated Press article, writer Jeff Mayerowitz said; “ Virgin America was the last major new US carrier. But since it started flying in August 2007, The San Francisco-based airline has lost hundreds of million dollars. It didn’t post its first annual profit until last year and that was only after it stopped its rapid expansion.”
While the costs of airline fuel, and just about everything else airline, has gone up, so have the ticket prices. This means that the newer oil prices have actually helped our industry, and while the resultant ticket prices might be unpleasant for travelers, the increase has helped our industry. Logically then, AIX is growing because the airlines are again growing… as demonstrated by airline stock growth. When they are doing well, our industry follows. To give you a better idea of the success of ticket price increases and the growth of ancillary revenue lets look at rise in airline stock prices (value). Note that these are the number increases NYSE traders are assigning to next year US airline stock valuations.

The message here is: the last two years have been positive for airlines and with the normal financial impact lag, 2014 should be a good year for IFEC.
Now for the show and this week we will tell you about some of the newer stuff we saw but you must remember that there are hundreds of interesting vendors and we could only visit a little over 20+ as time would permit.
Aircraft Cabin Systems’ Yukio Sugimoto came to AIX and we got him to pose in front of his New Technology retractable video display patent approval but we even more were excited about their teaming with TEAC. The IFE products company was brought back to life by Yoshi (Randy) Fuyama and his team. While we wont take you through the organizational ordeal, we note that with the SD Memory Card Video Reproducer and the ACS retractable displays, an airline can build a remarkably inexpensive IFE system that is virtually trouble free and lightweight.
Next, we should tell you about a couple of the newcomers, Solid State Inflight and Lock’N’Charge. First, Solid State is iPad/Content Solution Provider proved that iPads are becoming the “go-to” personal entertainment device… and now an airline can get a turnkey iPad model from one company, complete with locking/charge storage unit that rolls onboard from another company. Solid State will customize the tablet content (looks great), provide early window content, and deliver and set up the ground handling, as noted by Mark O’Brien. The UK-based company is a believer in helping vision impaired to get their IFE and PrivatAir is their first customer. While the storage and charging unite were demonstrated next door by Kevin Pillay whose ‘lock’n’charge’ devices were some of the best we have seen Solid State & LocknCharge
PCX.com is run by a very nice man named Cyril Jean. The company is a content provider and has a beautiful multimedia solution that was one of the best we have seen at AIX.Supported by UBIFRANCE, The company’s unique approach has enabled it to produce a range of products which access multimedia applications without the need of an onboard Internet connection. Cyril notes, “For our principal service which provides destination information, we will be unveiling our partnerships with major travel guides and travel entertainment for destinations. During the trade show, we will also be pleased to reveal strategic partnerships offering airlines new opportunities for their loyalty programs (FFP & Loyalty)”. PCX.com announced a series of strategic partnerships during the show and you can visit PX.com and brush up on your French.
You remember Brian Mooney, right? Cabin attendant turned Mr. Arinc, turned Mr. Allegiant, he showed IFExpress an iPad solution that really was first class, and we note, the iPad software product now has coverage in the cockpit, as well as the cabin as a report and manual device, a “Buy-on-Board” tablet, an ePIL (electronic passenger list) device, as well as a messaging unit. The big news this week is the Thales deal to purchase LiveTV and you can read it here. We found another blog reporter who had some interesting things to say about the deal. (Editors Note: In the past the folks at LiveTV have focused on the US, given their JetBlue customer. However, their plan for global reach has been one of Ku-band IPTV. They do have Ka-band capability in the HTS region that has a Ku overlay. With Thales, they now have the Inmarsat option that might change the order of things. Either way, they will be getting a new super-salesman, Mike Moeller… and we sure hope they keep those award winning trade show booths coming!)
2014 Crystal Cabin Award finalists announced
The finalists for the 2014 Crystal Cabin Awards have been announced, following deliberations by the 24-strong international judging panel, which includes representatives from airlines and all the major aircraft manufacturers, as they examined each of the 55 shortlisted entries from 12 countries. (Apologies to AIX/Reed for reformatting their release!)

The acWAP from Lufthansa Technik, is a high-speed router that makes data-intensive applications such as online games possible.
Armstrong Aerospace’s PowerBox, a mobile power point module that can be installed under a seat was announced.
Zodiac Aerospace’s ISIS Aft Complex, which puts the toilet and galley modules side-by-side on the rear wall, to add 3ft to the cabin length.
- Industrial Design & Visionary Concepts
US finalist B/E Aerospace took a similar approach to win a place with its Advanced Lavatory, a slimline toilet module which makes it possible to integrate up to six additional seats in an aircraft.
Zodiac’s Halo First Class design study, which is a lounge-like suite.
Also included was French seat maker Expliseat’s lightweight titanium seat.
- Greener Cabin, Health, Safety & Environment
German finalist Diehl Aerospace has developed DACAPO, a power saving, self-sufficient cabin system using rechargeable and replaceable battery trolleys.
Vision Systems has reached the final round with the Energia aircraft window in which a transparent photovoltaic film inserted into the pane simultaneously “harvests” solar energy and makes it possible to dim the window at the press of a button.
Zodiac enters the fray with another product in the ISIS range: the Modular Lavatory, which facilitates resource-friendly customization and substitution of individual bathroom and lavatory modules.

The hygienic toilet developed by Diehl Comfort System is operated using movement sensors, requiring no contact.
The other finalists in the category are Recaro’s ergonomic, lightweight CL3710 economy seat with extra knee room.

Two entrants from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands have reached the final, with Sense the Transitions, an innovative geotainment concept; and the ARC Seat Concept, an aircraft seat that can withstand stresses up to 16g.
Monash University in Australia is showing a concept for wheelchair boarding.
The finalists’ products and concepts will be presented in the Crystal Cabin Award Gallery at Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany next month (Hall B1, Booth A41), and on the second day of the exhibition (9 April, 11am), the winners will present their concepts to the public.

The IFExpress team has purposely avoided any updates of MH370 until we saw this article on Sunday that mentioned IFE – you have to read it… we were dumbstruck!
Beacon technology has been hailed as a game-changer in retail. It uses Bluetooth to trigger the display of information on phones and tablets that is relevant to the specific location and context of the user. Connecting and communicating efficiently with passengers throughout their journey is a widely held goal in the air transport industry and SITA Lab’s research has investigated the potential of using beacon technology in today’s airports. The benefits being touted for the technology, such as low cost and wide range, have a strong appeal for anyone wanting to connect directly with customers. But SITA Lab investigated if the technology works as advertized in the real world. Trials with a leading international airline and airport have produced results that are both promising and cautionary. SITA ’s CTO, Jim Peters noted; “SITA Lab is currently building an industry registry for all beacons. The goal is that any airline will have a single point of contact to go to use any beacon deployed by airports around the world. We are already working with some early adopters but are looking for other airports, airlines and app developers who are interested in leveraging the potential of beacons in the air transport industry to join the project.”
Editors Note: To get a bit more background on this exploding technology, here is a blurb from the Radius Network website about their Apple-based solution: “iBeacons are transmit only. They do not receive or collect any signals from mobile devices. iBeacons don’t detect the presence of your mobile device and therefore have no ability to know you are near or track your location. The bottom line, iBeacons are inherently privacy friendly. You can see them, but they can’t see you. With iBeacon technology, your mobile device is actually what detects the iBeacons. More specifically, an app installed on the mobile device can ask to be notified when the device sees a specific iBeacon. This works very similar to how geofences work when a mobile device crosses into a specific geographic location. Keep in mind that in order for a mobile device to detect and react to an iBeacon, an app MUST reside on the device and have requested the specific iBeacon identifiers it is interested in. The benefit of this approach is that it gives the user ultimate control. If a user does not want to interact with iBeacons, he or she can opt-out by not allowing the app to use location services (iOS), turning Bluetooth off, or uninstalling the app on their phone.” Think GPS when using iBeacons, and we also note, that there are already some 100 apps for iBeacons in the Apple iTunes store today. Android developers are spooling up as well. The underlying technology is Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) based and the rechargeable transmitter units are about the size of a mint tin that can run for days without a charge. This year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo, which played host to the world’s largest display of aircraft interiors products and services, welcomed 8906 (pre-audit) visitors through its doors between April 9-11. This was a 12% increase on the previous year. The exhibition featured over 500 exhibiting companies from 26 countries, covering a record floor space on 18,000 sq m – the largest footprint to date. Organized by Reed Exhibitions and taking place in Hamburg, Germany, the exhibition attracted over 750 airline representatives that were ideally placed to witness the launch of many new innovations in the cabin interior sector. Inflight Entertainment and Connectivity hosted numerous product launches and upgrades, including, TriaGnoSys’ AeroConnex+ which offers greater data streaming capabilities, integrated gatelink to 3G and 4G mobile phone networks and WLAN access point. Another key feature is its weight at only 4kg, making it 20% lighter than its predecessor. Panasonic Avionics used the exhibition to launch its new conceptual 14-inch monitor developed specifically with economy class in mind, while Lufthansa Systems unveiled its e-reader functionality for its BoardConnect Wireless IFE system.
As noted last week, over 300 delegates attended the Passenger Experience Conference that took place on 8th April at the CCH – Congress Center Hamburg. The audience, which included senior representatives of major airlines, air framers and cabin interiors suppliers, heard Tom Costley, Director, Head of Travel & Tourism, TNS UK give some encouraging news for the industry, saying that despite what looked like being a prolonged period of depressed global economic conditions, the travel and tourism sector was proving more resilient than most. The older generation, having both the desire and money to see the world, was a major driver. Don’t miss this one next year, and be sure to sneak over to the Food & Catering show – it rocks!

In case you are interested in the state of colored LED lighting, the folks at Bruce Aerospace kindly showed us a couple examples of LED colored wash lights that they have developed. In case you hadn’t noticed, this new lighting has taken the airline industry by storm. From the new product files, we really liked the SKYPower Combined from the KID Systeme folks. When airlines want to give it all to their upper class passengers, this is how you power them. The combined system delivers 110 AC and 5 volt USB power from one MCU. Coming to an airport near you soon – “Femtocells”. IFExpress talked to a retired IFE Genius recently about the use of Femtocells, and while they don’t have an airplane application, he told us: “As you may read HERE people are looking for “what if” the cell phone capacity of the world starts to ‘fill-up’? I already have a related issue in that where I live, I cannot get a reliable signal. I purchased a “Femtocell” device from ATT so that when I am at home, I can use my cellphone very reliably and not have dropped calls, etc. This device interfaces my cellphone to the Internet over my ISP, Comcast and somewhere along the line ATT picks up on it and puts the call back on its cellular network. REDMOND, WA. | May 29, 2012 – ACS is pleased to announce it has received
FAA Parts Manufacturing Authority (PMA) for its new 17 inch Wide Screen LCD Video
Monitor.
The Monitor is designed for Bulkhead and/or Ceiling installation. It is typically used
as a replacement for High Maintenance cost, heavier weight and more power
consuming Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors. The CRT monitors used on many older
aircraft are more costly to repair due to the lack of spare parts support for this older
technology.
The FAA-PMA also covers Bulkhead installation kits consisting of Shrouds/Mounting
brackets and cable assemblies to support the new LCD monitor.
ACS can provide installation kits “custom designed” for Ceiling Mounted installation
to ease the transition from CRT to LCD monitors.
REDMOND, WA. | May 23, 2012 – ACS announced today it has developed four
large LCD Video Monitors sized at 24”, 32”, 42” and 46” for use with the Honeywell
Ovation Select™ CMS.
The Monitors include a built-in Honeywell system Decoder which allows direct
connection to their very robust and open Ovation™ CMS Ethernet backbone. This
permits the HD ACS Ethernet Monitors to be used with any of the cabin video sources
available with the Honeywell CMS, including Blu-ray™ players that typically provide
the source of 1080p HD movies.
The HD ACS Monitors use LCD panels with native resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels
and use LED lamps instead of florescent lamp backlighting. This allows the monitors
to be thinner, have less weight and use less power. ACS has worked very closely
with Honeywell to insure successful integration of the ACS Monitors with the CMS.
ACS has recently received FAA-PMA for the 46” and 42” sizes on BBJ B737-700.
Several other unannounced orders will be the basis for FAA-PMA for the 32” and 24”
sizes by third quarter 2012.
The four monitors are available for ordering now.
The Aircraft Interiors mash-up in Hamburg ended this past week with some very interesting and unpredicted trends in the IFE space. For sure, the move toward smaller, thinner, lighter and more capable electronics was present. Second, third, and fourth generation electronics were claimed in the thin seat/thin and smart IFE world. Without a doubt, this is the trend of the next round of seatback/seat hardware. We really liked the Thales product!
There were a number of R&D projects almost ready for prime time: A wireless seat power development project that claimed 97% efficiency from KID (isn’t that better than wire?); a really great in-seat power supply design concept (Recaro and KID), which removed the seat power box and placed it in a central seat tube; a rapid prototyping capability for seat peripheral products (IFPC); a new, simple, content aggregation software from an Italian supplier; a new satcom/radio software data reduction algorithm that lops 40% of the overhead budget (TriaGnoSys); a new line of inflight hardware from a predominantly portable IFE supplier; a big sale for one fiber-optic IFE provider; two new seat power boxes; a 65” LCD Display; and so much more.
There is a big deal underway in IFE gatelink data that promises to expand ground-based IFE/airplane data that may finally automate that last node on the airline networks – the aircraft. It may do so by the build-up of ground-based networking…not in-flight connectivity. This offering looks like another SITA or ARINC and may incorporate their efforts as well. We will report on this project in the upcoming weeks.
iPad, iPad, iPad is all we heard about. No less that 8 vendors at the Hamburg Show had them in their booth. One even professed that it will be used as an inflight IFE offering. We do not know how it will ever pass DO-160 specifications so that rules out an imbedded application, but hope springs eternal. Additionally, the unit still stumbles with the lack of file handling capabilities and multitasking…not to mention security issues around file encryption. One rumor on the floor placed a major movie distributer in the booth of one vendor claiming they must print a retraction to an earlier news release claiming iPad first run movies? You can believe what you may but you heard it here first.
On the road, we wanted to give a tip-of-the-hat to Seattle Tacoma International Airport for their much appreciated, free Wi-Fi offered to all travelers. In an interview, the airport claimed that it costs them easily over $100,000 each year given the fees and royalties paid by service providers. Airports are not friendly places any more, but the folks at SeaTac deserve mention.
We hear Alaska Airlines will be offering introductory free Go-go Wi-Fi service till July 31, this year.
While air travel to and from the Hamburg show was nothing short of madness, thanks to the Icelandic volcano, we worry about the long-term impact on European air travel and airlines. Having experienced the absolute breakdown of one airline’s ability to manage the emergency we wonder if there are any management solutions to random weather emergencies? One thing for sure, it is going to cost us all more to fly!

Now for the Hot Topic: Never satisfied with the status quo of inflight LCD displays, Yukio Sugimoto founder of Aircraft Cabin Systems (ACS) recently rolled out the biggest cabin display yet. The HDMI certified 65” LCD video monitor knocked us out when we saw it at their new Redmond, Washington facility. Sporting a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 (3x pixels), the mondo-monitor just breaks the 100-pound mark and is bound to be the “must have” for the biz jet set and the Head of State crowd. The unit will be on display in the ACS booth # 6C15 at the AIX in Hamburg. We understand one customer has already signed-up for the first unit off the production line and ACS anticipates a robust demand for this product. Lastly, you know how show rumors persist and this year is no exception! Lumexis is purportedly going to release the name of their “new” customer at AIX on Tuesday in Germany. We hear that the airline is Fly Dubai. Don’t jump to conclusions readers!
