– Wireless IFE solution named Best Single Achievement in Passenger Experience / Second major industry award in a row

Long Beach/Kelsterbach | September 18, 2012 — Lufthansa Systems received the aviation industry’s coveted Avion Award at a gala ceremony during the APEX EXPO 2012 in Long Beach last night. The IT provider’s wireless in-flight entertainment system, BoardConnect, was voted Best Single Achievement in Passenger Experience (Vendor) by a jury of experts from the airline passenger experience industry and members of the media, ranking it first in a strong field of “game-changing” services and solutions. The jury praised BoardConnect as the single most important innovation influencing the passenger experience in the last year.

Norbert Müller, Head of Program Management BoardConnect at Lufthansa Systems, stated, “This prize is an accolade for our efforts to develop a true innovation enabling an entire aircraft full of passengers to access wireless entertainment right from their own mobile devices. Today we have aircraft in regular operations where more than 250 passengers stream content to their PEDs at the same time, and this is not the end. The award shows that our idea has landed in the industry.”

BoardConnect is a wireless in-flight entertainment system that comprises a server on board the aircraft and a few wireless access points throughout the cabin. BoardConnect offers audio and video on demand on wireless-enabled passenger electronic devices as well as embedded screens in the aircraft cabin. This innovative solution is extremely cost-efficient and reliable, and it enables airlines to offer a wide range of information and entertainment that can be updated quickly and easily. BoardConnect also opens up the opportunity for new personalized on-board services and new ways of generating revenue through in-flight sales, for example.

Since no wiring is required to transmit data in the cabin, airlines can install Board Connect during routine maintenance or night stops without the need for additional ground time. The solution is also extremely reliable and incurs much lower operating costs than previous systems. The elimination of wiring and data transmission hardware can reduce the weight significantly which also result in fuel savings.

The Avion Award is the second major industry award for BoardConnect this year. At the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg in March, the solution already won the prestigious Crystal Cabin Award 2012.
